About Leicester: the 2024 hosts...

This two-day conference is an excellent opportunity to discover the impact of transformational change in a people-friendly city.

The City Mayor’s ‘Connecting Leicester’ Programme has delivered transport integration, new public realm and dramatically improved networks for people walking, wheeling and cycling as part of economic revitalisation and regeneration.

There will be a warm and exciting welcome from Leicester, in the heart of the East Midlands, for experts and change-makers from across the UK and beyond.

It will be a great opportunity to share ideas, experiences and practical examples of building or re-purposing streets and neighbourhoods for people, not just cars.

The conference takes place at the De Montfort University.

Leicester City Council was rated as one the highest performing local authorities in the first Government review of active travel infrastructure and support.

Active Travel England – the government’s executive agency tasked with making walking, wheeling and cycling the preferred choice for everyday trips – published its first annual active travel capability ratings for local authorities in 2023.

Chris Boardman, Active Travel Commissioner

"Designing activity back into our neighbourhoods and creating places where children have transport independence is achievable – it just needs smart planning"

Chris Boardman, Active Travel Commissioner

Leicester is one of just five local authorities to achieve a 3 rating, putting it among the top performing councils. All 79 local authorities outside London took part in the process.*
